On Wednesday, February 28, 2018, the City of Frankfort was awarded the Indoor / Outdoor Facility of the Year and Department of the Year for a Class II Community by the Kentucky Recreation and Park Society.
The Indoor / Outdoor facility award recognizes a facility that offers a unique enhancement to the quality of life in the field of recreation and leisure services.
The City of Frankfort received the award for the Juniper Hills Family Aquatic Center, which opened in July 2015. The Aquatic Center is a state of the art water playground facility whose features include lap swimming, water slide, lazy river and splash pads. The Center provides an affordable recreation venue for people of all ages, interests and abilities.
The Outstanding Department award recognizes a department or agency who has demonstrated outstanding contributions in recreation services.
The City of Frankfort Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Department is a full service department that features 9 parks that include: nature trails
The department operates an 18-hole golf course on 94 acres, historic sites including the Capital City Museum and Fort Hill, supports recreational venues including futsal, baseball, softball and volleyball, as well as local boat tours on the Kentucky River.
In addition, Jim Parrish, Director of the City of Frankfort Parks, Recreation and Historic Sites Department was given the organization's highest honor, the Presidential Citation for his over 40 years of service to the profession. Jim has worked for the City of Frankfort since 1976 and has served as the Director since 2015.
